All Hands on Deck ~ Cost, Care & Maintenance

In our third installment on appropriate flooring for decks, we will discuss the varying costs, care and maintenance associated with the materials currently available.

As we know from our previous discussion, wood is still the most popular and aesthetically pleasing deck flooring product out there. More than just attractive, it does have innate advantages of comfort and attractive pricing at the outset. However, wood requires more maintenance and care than other materials such as plastic or metal. Wood needs to be treated, stained, and protected from the elements. This level of maintenance can be time-intensive and costly.

Regardless, most folks accept the trade-off due to wood’s inherent beauty and flexible nature. Despite plastic, metal and composite combinations’ longer-lasting and more durable qualities, keep in mind nothing lasts forever and some sort of maintenance is required for whichever option you choose.

Maintenance can range from a simple rinse with a hose to a more thorough process involving the use of a pressure washer or chemicals. A good rule of thumb is that typically deterioration will decrease in correlation to the rise in initial cost with the notable exception of treated pine. Although it is more durable and generally less costly than other types of wood decking, treated pine is widely considered to be less pleasing to the eye.

Here are a few relevant items regarding the varying costs and care associated with decking products. First, wood is available in a large-scale of price points ranging from the very inexpensive to the extremely pricey such as mahogany. As discussed, it is cosmetically attractive and widely utilized. However, it will fade and change color over time. It does require periodic staining and will need to be replaced at a certain point.

Composite or blended materials typically cost more than wood but conversely require less maintenance and last longer. Similarly to wood, it can fade unless produced from a colorfast material. It will expand, contract, grow moldy and mildewed as well. Another detraction is its artificial appearance.

Plastic is more expensive than either wood or composite decking. The benefit lies in its long lifespan, continued look and appearance, such as retaining its original color, and minimal maintenance. It is available in a variety of textures. Once again, the artificial look and feel oftentimes creates an adverse reaction on the part of the homeowner.

Finally, metal is the most expensive material available; however, as discussed, the care and maintenance is minimal in both effort and price. Aesthetics suffer greatly which is why metal or aluminum decking is not widely utilized in the residential arena.

All Hands on Deck ~ More Than Wood

In our second installment on appropriate flooring for decks, we now turn to all the different materials available ~ it’s not just about wood, anymore!

Believe it or not, plastic, metal, and composite combinations of wood and plastic are viable options for decks. More than durable, these materials can withstand years, if not decades, of wear and tear due to heavy usage and climate conditions.

Granted, many folks believe wood is far more attractive and we do not dispute this position; however, if durability and value exceed your need or desire for aesthetics, consider the possibilities. There are literally dozens of deck flooring materials comprised of wood, metal, plastic and wood/plastic combinations. Wood, as discussed, remains the most popular option. Although less expensive, initially, we now know that the ensuing care and maintenance can be costly.

The second most popular material is composite decking. Albeit a distant second, it is, nevertheless, an option which should be considered. Composite decks are molded from a mix of plastic and wood. The wood is comprised of different species; however, the plastic is usually composed of polyethylene or vinyl materials.

Plastic decking is rarely completely plastic in nature; materials such as polystyrene, polyethylene, and fiberglass are often utilized. Some of these decks are water-resistant and provide excellent protection from rain and other weather-related elements. Others are not as water-resistant. Your flooring specialist can provide direction and advice regarding this matter.

Metal decking is the least popular option among homeowners. Oftentimes derived from aluminum, it is not very attractive or comfortable to walk on. Additionally, the initial cost for installation tends to skew higher than other materials although the care and maintenance is minimal.

Speaking of cost, care and maintenance, that is what we will discuss next time! We will review the different decking materials so you can determine which one works best for you and your family.

All Hands on Deck ~ Hardwoods & More

Spring has sprung; and with the advent of warmer weather our thoughts turn to the outdoors. Have you considered your deck, lately? Chances are you may need to shore up those wood planks or completely replace them especially if you’re planning to entertain.

But, let’s say you’re tired of maintaining wood and all the effort (and cost) it takes due to weather damage and other factors. Are there other options?

Well, you’re in luck because the choices available today are far more numerous and affordable than ever before. And here’s the kicker: you can still utilize wood if you desire ~ 85% of residential decks in the U.S. still do ~ or you can try something new. Innovative products are continually being introduced so the choice is truly yours to make.

Let’s start with wood since it is still the most popular option. Species of hardwood include Redwood, Cedar, Pine, Jarra, Ipe (Brazilian Walnut) and Mahogany. Before choosing a particular product, keep in mind that wood tends to warp and change color over time. Ipe or Brazilian Walnut is sometimes referred to as the “gold standard” of decking due to its durability and inherent resistance to mold and mildew.

Redwood, Cedar, Pine, and Jarra, also known as Eucalyptus marginata, are traditional choices for decking as well. Not as durable or resistant to adverse factors as Ipe; they are nevertheless often chosen for aesthetic reasons such as color or finish.

You may also wish to consider Janka Hardness Scale ratings prior to your purchase. The Janka Hardness Scale measures the resistance of different wood species to withstand denting, wear, climate and other factors. Janka hardness ratings are often used to determine whether a species of wood is suitable for various flooring applications. The higher the rating, the more durable the species; for instance, Ipe’s rating is 3684 whereas Mahogany scores a mere 800. Considering the adverse climate conditions your deck may have to withstand, taking the Janka hardness ratings into consideration is essential.

Next time, we will discuss different decking profiles, additional options such as plastic or metal, and how to choose the best flooring for your needs.

Calling All Wine Lovers – Recycled Wine Corks & Your Floor

Cork is a surprisingly versatile material; it is completely natural, 100% renewable, and eco-friendly. Cork is utilized in a wide array of products such as sporting goods, shoes, art pieces, ceiling coverings and, of course, bottle stoppers which brings us back to wine corks and your floor.

Incredible as it seems, cork is an ideal flooring material. Harvested from the bark of cork oak trees throughout the globe, it flourishes easily in the right climate and is protected and cultivated wisely. In fact, cork oak trees are far more plentiful today than in years past thanks to rigorous forestry rules and regulations.

Cork is highly flexible and resistant to fire and damage from rot. It’s lightweight, expandable, and resilient. This combination of characteristics ensures cork is an ideal material for a myriad of applications. Did we mention that it also floats? Hence, it’s use in buoys and fishing accessories!

With all these fantastic uses, how could we NOT consider cork flooring? All of the above not withstanding; cork’s innate elasticity and resistance to wear and tear makes it inherently conducive as flooring material and in wall and ceiling tiles as well. Additionally, it is naturally insulating due to its low conductivity to vibration and sound.

So, back to wine…er, rather, wine corks. How on earth are wine corks recycled into flooring?

The corks are recycled and subsequently turned into floor tiles. The process is not unlike that of traditional tile creation. The recycled corks are cut into disks and mounted to a paper backing. Commonly referred to as “cork mosaic tile” its appearance is similar to the highly popular “penny” tiles (see previous posts), but far softer to the touch.

Cork can be substituted for any type of tile including wall, ceiling, and floor tiles making it a simple and obvious choice for the environmentally-minded. Consult your flooring specialist to see if cork is the ideal choice for you and your family!

An Unusual Option – Peach Pit Floors

Here’s a green flooring option we bet you haven’t considered: Peach Pit Flooring. That’s right, floors made out of recycled peach pits. No, it’s not April Fool’s Day yet; there is actually a company in South Africa which created this new flooring concept and we admit that we’re intrigued.

Although bamboo, cork, and other materials are well-known and widely used; peach pits are a relatively new innovation in eco-friendly flooring products. They are easily replenished and the production process for recycling is not overly arduous.

Stone Fruit Floors of Cape Town in South Africa is behind this fascinating phenomenon, and we decided to dig a bit deeper and uncover more information to see how these floors could provide that extra bit of pizzazz for the environmentally-conscious and discerning consumer.

As it turns out, these floors are handmade to create an extraordinary and unique end product. In other words, no two floors are ever the same. The pits are glued on by hand and filled in with a generous mixture of sand and resin. Urethane seals the floors and provides a smooth finish. So smooth, in fact, that the floor is comfortable for all manner of shoe wear and bare feet alike. According to the company’s Facebook page, “The sharp edges of the {pits} are grinded off, firstly to expose the warm red colour hue of the {pits} and secondly to make it very comfortable to walk on with bare feet. The floors are thus fully “handmade” and with a low carbon footprint.”

Although urethane is not considered green, peach pits are certainly a renewable resource and readily available. Another positive aspect of these floors is their unique look and feel – certainly a conversation piece in any home.

As with any other fixture in your home, you will need to take your lifestyle and other relevant factors into consideration before deciding to purchase and install a flooring product. After all, you and your family will live with your decision for a long time so be sure to do your homework and weigh all your options prior to purchasing any flooring product.

So, what are our options? Natural Pebble Tile is a popular choice. These tiles are usually available in their natural states mined from beaches across the world. Applications are varied ranging from outdoor settings to showers and baths. Their surfaces are not always flat or even so bear this in mind when choosing these tiles.

Conversely, Sliced Pebbles consistently display a flat and even surface. These tiles are individually cut or sliced to reflect the look and feel of natural pebbles in a flat surface. These tiles are ideal for any room in your room with a complimentary décor.

Glazed Tiles are treated with a high gloss sealer providing a brilliant shine or “glaze” for extra definition. The appearance is striking and oftentimes provides the focal point in a room.

Polished Pebbles are similar to Glazed Tiles in appearance but far more slippery when wet; use extra caution and adequate grout if applying to showers, baths, or pool areas. These tiles are available in exclusive colors.

Finally, we come full circle to Mosaic Stone Tiles. These tiles are not comprised of pebbles, but are similar in look and feel. Traditionally, Mosaic stones are flat and available in both natural and high gloss finishes.

There are nearly as many different types of pebbles available to create these stunning tiles as there are styles, colors, and designs. In the past, Pebble tiles were primarily utilized in showers and bathrooms; however, innovative design concepts are presenting a plethora of options for the creatively-minded homeowner.

More recent applications include Pebble tile for your fireplace or mantle. The polished appearance of pebble versus brick provides an elegant, stunning finish. These tiles can easily withstand heat and will not fade over time.

Mosaic Glass Tiles…On Your Floor?

You bet! These gorgeous tiles lend a look and feel of complete elegance and beauty. But, they do have a downside and are not appropriate for everyone. So, what are the benefits and drawbacks associated with Mosaic Glass?

The innate sophistication and simple glamour of this application is unmatched. Mosaic Glass is available in a plethora of styles and designs. Regardless of whether you choose solid or multicolored tiles, the effect can be breathtaking. Another plus is the tiles’ tendency to reflect light which will bathe your room in a lovely, luminous glow. No other flooring material on the market today can compare to the sheer radiance of these glass tiles.

For the environmentally-minded, Mosaic Glass is considered a “green” alternative. Ceramic tiles use 50% more energy to produce versus Mosaic. Another option is to utilize recycled glass significantly decreasing the impact on the environment.

Additionally, Mosaic is surprisingly durable and relatively easy to clean. Glass is inherently resistant to mold and mildew. Grime will not sully these tiles and they are nearly impervious to stains. Simply wipe with a damp cloth or a warm-water mop to wash off the dirt.

Now, for the downside: Mosaic Glass can be costly. Individual tiles run from forty dollars up to a hundred dollars per square foot for specialty designs and colors. It is not recommended for heavy traffic areas due to its susceptibility to breakage and scratching. Despite its durability, Mosaic Glass can crack easily under the force of a dropped object; particularly, a heavy object. Scratches will accumulate over time marring the beauty and finish of your floor.

Another issue for concern, especially in homes with small children and/or seniors, is the slipping factor on a wet floor. Glass, as we know, is an unusually smooth surface and while lovely, can pose a hazard in your home.

Finally, Mosaic Glass installation is extraordinarily difficult and not recommended as a do-it-yourself project for the layperson. Do yourself a favor and hire a pro to properly install this type of floor.

Now that you have all the facts, consider Mosaic Glass tiles for a lovely and unusual flooring alternative in your home!

Trackless Floors – Berber, Frieze and Textured Carpeting

If you enjoy the look and feel of carpet but don’t care for track marks left by vacuum cleaners or footprints – you’re in luck!

Trackless carpeting has actually been available for awhile; but as flooring innovations continue to improve at a dizzying pace, your choices are more vast and affordable than before. Truly trackless carpets are designed to absorb and eliminate tracks. Berber and Frieze are two of the most popular styles within the trackless genre.

Berber carpeting typically does not feel as thick or soft as Frieze due to the type of fibers used and construction. Genuine Frieze carpeting is manufactured with extremely high twist levels creating a softer, more luxurious feel. Textured carpets may attempt to emulate Frieze but usually fall short due to the significant reduction of twists per tuft level.

Genuine Frieze actually employs seven to nine turns per inch for each tuft with two piles of yarn in between. Other trackless styles may have only three to four turns per inch and require the use of “stuffer box” yarn and steam to achieve a crimped or curled effect whereas Frieze accomplishes curl naturally due to its high twist levels.

Have you ever run your hand across a cut pile carpet and noticed a direction change in the pile? The ensuing directional change can create a perception of difference in color depending on the light. You have effectively changed the “light reflectance” by this one simple action. In essence, you will note more variation in color when you encounter higher carpet density occuring with stuffer box styles. This is an unlikely event with true Frieze carpeting.

Of course, Frieze generally costs more than other types of trackless carpet but with the additional cost comes longevity and higher performance levels. Stuffer box styles tend to lose their texture over time due to foot traffic. In rooms with heavy traffic, you will undoubtedly have to replace your textured carpet more often.

It is important to know the difference between textured, trackless, Berber, Frieze, and other styles when purchasing carpeting for your home. Trackless carpets tend to be far more numerous and readily available through retail outlets due to cost and other factors. Regardless, your carpet retailer can help you choose the best style and fit for your home.

Climate-Friendly Flooring and How it Impacts Your Family

In Atlanta, we are fortunate to enjoy relatively mild winters; however, summertime in our fair city is not always for the faint of heart. High humidity and sweltering temperatures are oftentimes the norm during the peak of the summer months; the debate over climate change, notwithstanding. Conversely, other areas of the country enjoy cool summers but may suffer from brutal extremes in wintertime. Regardless of your geographical location, there is a suitable floor to fit any climate.

Climate-friendly flooring is essential for homes in areas which experience extreme conditions. Either end of the temperature spectrum ~ hot or cold~ can warp or crack floors. Humidity levels also play an integral role when it comes to flooring choices. Hardwood, cork, and bamboo floors are all subject to warping and cracking due to humidity levels. If your area experiences high humidity on a routine basis, we recommend decreasing indoor moisture via a dehumidifier and exhaust fans. If low levels of humidity are the culprit, utilize a humidifier to increase moisture in the air and protect your flooring. The key is to maintain a consistent environment. Either way, you and your family will undoubtedly appreciate an increased comfort level.

If, on the other hand, you live in a hot, dry, arid area, tile or stone flooring is recommended. Laminates and hardwoods do not perform as well in this type of environment. Denizens in southwestern states are all too aware of the damage this type of climate creates; hence, the predominance of stone and tile floors in many of these homes.

Recently, several areas of the country experienced severe flooding. Water is one of the most detrimental elements in nature. Given enough time, it can destroy objects as hard as stone. So, if you reside in an environment prone to flooding, there are several steps you can take to protect your home. First, ensure all entry points for water are sealed. Second, if your home is in a flood plain or prone to flood, concrete and tile flooring are your best bets due to their inherently water-resistant nature.

Additionally, you may wish to consider increasing the space between your floor and subfloor to allow unrestrained passage of water thereby eliminating the threat of pressure buildup which can result in severe damage to your home.

Your best bet is to consult with the staff of your local flooring outlet to determine the ideal floor for your specific environment.
